Japan's Signing of Surrender : 09.02.1945

September 2, 1945
Japan's Signing of Surrender
Japan's unconditional surrender in World War II was announced on August 15, 1945, and formally signed on September 2, 1945, on the deck of the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay, which ended the war and was prompted by the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the Soviet Union's declaration of war. The Potsdam Declaration demanded this surrender, threatening "prompt and utter destruction" if Japan refused. The formal signing of the Instrument of Surrender detailed the complete capitulation of all Japanese forces and placed the authority of the emperor and
government under the control of the Allied Powers.
