The Esoteric section of the Theosophical Society was formed in 1888: 'To promote the esoteric interests of the Theosophical Society by the deeper study of esoteric philosophy' (from a circular dated October 9th 1888). The Esoteric Section was the more practical occult side of the Theosophical Society; indeed Blavatsky made it clear that it was not actually to be affiliated with the TS itself, and its teachings were intended for a select secret group. Instructions I, II and III were produced in her lifetime, which expanded to IV, V and VI after her death. The Instructions were not published publicly until the 1897 revised edition of the Secret Doctrine, with some changes and omissions.
