In 1983, US President Ronald Reagan proposed the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI), which was derisively nicknamed "Star Wars" by the media, including Time magazine. This initiative, aimed at creating a missile defense system using space-based technologies, was met with significant criticism for its potential to disrupt the balance of power during the Cold War and to reignite an arms race. Time magazine's cover story and numerous articles throughout the 1980s covered the Star Wars initiative, showcasing both its proponents and detractors.
